I am not too proud to admit that I like TV. I particularly love any show that makes me laugh. After a stressful day teaching all I want to do is turn my brain off, knit, and watch something hilarious on TV that will take my mind off my troubles.
TV knitting is a very particular kind of knitting. The right balance has to be found between the show and the knitting project. For example, I can’t watch anything dramatic while knitting (Downton Abbey). I get too engrossed in what is going on and the various plot twists that my knitting ends up untouched or with a serious mistake. I also can’t knit anything too challenging while watching TV (brioche, complicated lace, anything with a precise stitch count). I end up too focused on the knitting and the background noise becomes frustrating when I am trying to concentrate.
Several of my knitting friends have a project that they only work on while watching TV. As a monogamous knitter I usually have to choose my knitting + activity based on what I am working on. Right now, I am working on a looooooong wrap that has only 4 repeated rows. At this point, I could probably work on it while I drive (I am just kidding…please don’t knit and drive!). It is the perfect project to take with me to my knitting group, work on while I watch TV, listen to a book with or take with me in the car next weekend for our 6 hour drive to Albuquerque. More challenging/intense projects typically result in listening to a book or calming music.
If you are looking for some funny/mindless TV to go with your knitting here is what I recommend:
- The Big Bang Theory
- Gilmore Girls
- Brooklyn 99
- Friends
- Seinfeld
- The Middle
- That 70’s Show
- Modern Family
- The Simpsons
I find I knit fast during TV sports, especially Nascar! Admittedly it must be something like stockinette stitch

Me too! NFL football starts this week and I always get a lot of knitting done during the games. I think it is just the right amount of background noise and minimal interest on my part.
