I am a monogamous knitter. I knit faithfully on a single project until it is complete 98% of the time. The few times I have tried to work on more than one project I found it very stressful. I hate having unfinished projects. They get stuck in my brain and I start to obsess about getting them both done even though, realistically, I can only work on one project at a time.
Sometimes I think I am the only monogamous knitter out there. Am I?
I love completing a project. I am both proud and relieved all at the same time. When I finish a project it feels like I am turning over a new leaf. I can choose what to knit next without feeling any guilt about another languishing project. When I have more than one project going I don’t have these same happy feelings. I have a nagging voice inside my head reminding me something else isn’t finished.
Do I get tired of projects? Of course! I have worked on many shawls where each row grows larger because of increases and toward the end as each row takes a half hour or more I start to feel annoyed. When this happens I have take a few days off from a project and watch TV without knitting or read a book. I have also done a little swatching to break the monotony of a large project. I never regret following though and finishing one project before starting another. It is always worth the struggle. My current work in progress will end up being 98 inches long. The struggle is real sometimes but I know it will be worth it in the end.
There are probably lots of knitters out there that think I am strange because I am a monogamous knitter. Maybe I am a little. My knitting monogamy helps make me a productive knitter and it also helps keep my stash to a minimum. I only buy yarn towards the end of a project and use it as motivation to finish what I am working on.
Part of what I love about knitting and other crafts is the variety that is out there. I know many polyamorous knitters who love to work on multiple projects. I don’t think that there is any one right way. Knitting makes me happy and knitting one project at a time makes me even more happy. If knitting multiple projects at the same time is what you enjoy, do it!
P.S. Did you notice my punny title? You’re welcome 😉
